What You Can Do to Speak Up for Science

By Matthew Campen posted 02-13-2025 10:01 AM

As a science-driven organization, SOT is dedicated to offering tools, resources, and platforms that empower scientists to advance and share their research, contributing to the improvement of public, environmental, and animal health.

Recent US executive and federal agency actions have resulted in deep concerns about the ability of SOT members and others in the biomedical community to continue to conduct critical and necessary research. SOT remains committed to supporting the science of toxicology and will identify ways in which the Society can assist efforts to maintain and strengthen resources, assets, and funding for the biomedical community.

SOT recognizes that many of its members also may be looking for ways to take action. While SOT does not directly provide advocacy materials, we’ve curated a selection of resources from our partners and other organizations within the biomedical science community.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

On its “How to Engage” web page, the AAAS Office of Government Relations contains information on what advocacy is, resources (such as webinars and workshops) designed to enhance advocacy, and how to contact your representatives.

Americans for Medical Progress (AMP)

AMP outlines the “Steps to Research Advocacy” on its website, which include (1) knowing the issue, (2) knowing your audience, and (3) knowing your opposition. AMP also offers ways to support research through advocacy.

Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB)

On its website, FASEB has an advocacy toolkit that details how to take actions such as requesting meetings with lawmakers, planning a congressional visit, writing to Congress, and more.

In addition, for those wanting to comment on the implementation of a 15% rate for facilities and administration costs associated with National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants issued to institutions of higher education, FASEB has developed a letter that you can customize and send to your US Senators and Representatives.
