SOT is excited to recognize outstanding contributions in risk assessment, chemical regulation, and toxicological leadership through two of its most prestigious honors: the Arnold J. Lehman Award and the Founders Award (for Outstanding Leadership in Toxicology). These awards celebrate the individuals whose vision, expertise, and leadership have advanced safety evaluation and shaped the future of toxicology.

Arnold J. Lehman Award

The Arnold J. Lehman Award honors individuals who have made pivotal contributions to risk assessment and the regulation of chemical agents, including pharmaceuticals. Whether through rigorous scientific research or the application of sound principles, recipients of this award have significantly influenced the regulatory landscape. Awardees receive a commemorative plaque and a cash stipend, presented during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony.

Supported by the SOT Endowment Fund, the Founders Award is reserved for Full, Emeritus, or Retired Full members of SOT who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting the role of toxicological sciences in safety decision-making. Recipients have developed and applied innovative approaches to distinguish safe from unsafe levels of exposure to chemical and physical agents. This award also includes a plaque and cash stipend. It will be presented during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony.

How to Nominate

Help us celebrate individuals who have made a lasting impact on the fields of safety evaluation and toxicological leadership.

Nomination packages for both awards must include two letters of nomination from SOT Full members (one primary and one secondary). These letters should clearly describe the nominee’s most significant contributions, written in layman’s terms, and address how the nominee meets the award criteria. Strong packages include two distinct, detailed letters that provide a comprehensive view of the nominee’s achievements.

Nominees must also submit an up-to-date CV (limited to 10 pages) that highlights the nominee’s most impactful professional accomplishments relevant to the award. Only the first 10 pages will be reviewed.

By nominating a colleague, you help highlight the groundbreaking work that continues to advance toxicology, improve public safety, and inspire the next generation of scientists. Make your nomination before the October 9 deadline.

For more information on making a nomination, please review the “Awards Review Process and FAQs” web page of the SOT website. Please direct any inquiries to SOT Headquarters.

Preference will be given to nominees who have not received one of the following SOT Awards in the past two years: Achievement, Arnold J. Lehman, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, Education, Enhancement of Animal Welfare, Founders, Leading Edge in Basic Science, Merit, Public Communications, Toxicologist Mentoring, Translational Impact, and Undergraduate Educator Awards.
