It’s that time again. SOT is gearing up for the ninth annual Tox ShowDown (yep, even remotely—can you believe it?), the toxicological quiz game par excellence where members test wits against members. Grab your moment of fame—sign up as a contestant!

The ShowDown will be included as part of the 2021 Virtual Annual Meeting and will be delivered via a digital platform! This fun activity is scheduled for March 22, 2021 4:30 pm–6:30 pm (US Eastern Daylight Time, UTC -4). This year, the Graduate Student Leadership Committee (GSLC) is engaged to help expand the event to include as many teams as would like to participate. Teams will battle each other to answer questions wholly, partly, or remotely related to toxicology. Topics cover the gamut, including the eye-opening roles of toxicology in history, current events, arts, culture, and society—not to mention science.

Even if you had to retake molecular genetics three times in graduate school, don’t know the difference between metabolomics and macroeconomics, or can’t prevent your zebrafish from escaping from their tanks, you can be a star in the ShowDown.

Studies have shown that research grant committees, prospective employers, and scientific award panels put greater stock in ShowDown contestant participation than education, work experience, publications, or other honors combined. And if you believe that one, we’ve got a bridge to sell you.

So, gather two to six of your colleagues to set up your own team, or show up and be randomly placed with others to try to top the leaderboard! Even if you just want to come and watch the fun, all are welcome to join, but we know breakout groups benefit from active participants!

There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain, and you’re guaranteed to have a blast, so give it a shot. We are an equal-opportunity shop, and everyone is welcome to play. And think of it: you won’t have to endure any scrutiny to qualify. Don’t get locked out. Get your team in place soon and email your team members’ names and email addresses to Ben Kistinger so that we can get your team caucus room set up in advance. Only SOT Annual Meeting registrants can participate come game day, so make sure to register for the meeting if you have not yet done so!

There’s no time to lose, so send your teams as soon as you can, but no later than March 10.
