Do you know an SOT member whose work has made an enduring impact on toxicology? Nominations are now open for the 2027 SOT Merit Award and Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award. These prestigious honors recognize career-long contributions and seminal scientific accomplishments that continue to strengthen and advance the field.

Merit Award

The Merit Award recognizes an SOT member who has made distinguished contributions to toxicology throughout their career. These contributions may span research, teaching, regulatory activities, consulting, and service to SOT. The recipient receives a plaque and cash stipend, is invited to deliver the Merit Award Lecture during the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, and is invited to present a lecture during a EUROTOX meeting.

Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award

The Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award honors an SOT member who is actively engaged in toxicological research and has made substantial and seminal scientific contributions to the understanding of toxicology. Scientific accomplishment is the primary consideration for this award. The recipient receives a plaque and cash stipend and is invited to deliver the Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award Lecture during the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo.

Making a Nomination

Nominations for both awards are due October 9, 2026. Each nomination package must include:

For the Merit Award, the letters should describe the nominee’s career highlights and explain the significance of their contributions to toxicology. For the Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award, the letters should provide specific examples and documentation of the nominee’s scientific contributions.

Preference will be given to nominees who have not received one of the following SOT Awards in the past two years: Achievement, Arnold J. Lehman, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, Education, Enhancement of Animal Welfare, Founders, Leading Edge in Basic Science, Merit, Public Communications, Toxicologist Mentoring, Translational Impact, and Undergraduate Educator Awards.
