Recognize Contributions to Animal Welfare, Public Communications, and Science Policy

By Reza Rasoulpour posted 7 days ago

SOT recognizes individuals who strengthen toxicology through responsible research practices, effective public outreach, and support for science in public policy and decision-making. To honor these contributions, SOT members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals for these awards: the Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award, Public Communications Award, and SOT Science Policy Leadership Award.

Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award

The Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award recognizes an SOT member whose work has advanced toxicological science through the development and application of methods that replace, refine, or reduce the need for experimental animals. It also honors significant contributions to the scientifically sound and responsible use of animals in research and to public awareness of the importance of animals in toxicology research. The recognized achievement may be a seminal piece of work or a long-term contribution to toxicological science and animal welfare. The award consists of a plaque presented during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony and a cash stipend.

Public Communications Award

The Public Communications Award recognizes an individual who has made a major contribution to broadening public awareness of toxicological issues, including public understanding of the role and importance of experimental animals in toxicological science. The award reflects accomplishments achieved over a significant period through public communications. Qualifying work may appear in books, brochures, continuing education courses, databases, extension bulletins, magazines, newspapers, public presentations or forums, radio or television scripts, workshops, and other communications formats. The award consists of a plaque presented during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony and a cash stipend.

SOT Science Policy Leadership Award

The SOT Science Policy Leadership Award recognizes an elected government official at the local, state, national, or international level who demonstrates support for science related to protecting or advancing the health and safety of people, animals, and/or the environment. Eligible nominees must meet at least one of two criteria: recognize and support scientific research that increases knowledge and advances the protection of people, animals, and/or environmental health; or pursue public policy or decision-making related to health and safety.

Nominate a Deserving Candidate

Nominations for all three awards are due on October 9, 2026.

Nominations for the Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award and Public Communications Award must include:

  • A nomination letter from an active Full SOT member

  • A current CV for the nominee, limited to 10 pages

  • A seconding letter from another active Full SOT member

For the Enhancement of Animal Welfare Award, the letters should document specific methods used by the nominee to replace, refine, or reduce the need for experimental animals and analyze the nominee’s contributions to their scientifically sound and responsible use in research.

For the Public Communications Award, the letters should document and describe the nominee’s significant public communication contributions. A CV listing alone is not sufficient for either award.

A nomination for the SOT Science Policy Leadership Award requires one nomination letter from an SOT member describing how the elected official has supported scientific research or policy addressing the protection of human, animal, and/or environmental health. A CV and seconding letter are not required materials for this award.
