Undergraduate students who submit an abstract for the next SOT Annual Meeting also are eligible to apply for travel support and an impactful meeting experience. The deadline for applications coincides with the new abstract deadline October 19. Pfizer and SOT recognize the importance of early involvement in toxicology to recruit undergraduates for graduate school and careers in toxicology.

Irisyunuel Hernandes from North Carolina Central University received a 2018 Pfizer SOT Award.

Most of the previous recipients of this award have pursued careers in biomedical science. Some who are current SOT members were highlighted in a recent Communiqué article. As Natalie Johnson, now a faculty member at Texas A&M, reported, “The SOT meeting was my first scientific conference and my first real chance to interact with scientists in the field of toxicology....Armed with information about what I could do with an advanced degree in toxicology, my decision to continue in this field was made up before my return flight landed and I had unpacked all the freebies collected at the ToxExpo.”

Jacob Noeker, College of Idaho, was a 2018 Pfizer SOT recipient.

This award recognizes outstanding undergraduates who have not yet received their bachelor's degrees based on the quality of the submitted poster abstract, personal statement, academic record, and the advisor’s supporting recommendation. Each recipient is matched with a Pfizer scientist as a mentor for the meeting, is recognized at a special breakfast hosted by Pfizer, and attends the SOT Sunday Undergraduate Education Program and participates in other meeting activities.

More information, including the application and nomination forms, are found on the SOT Awards site.

Other opportunities for undergraduates include travel support through the SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program and Regional Chapter recognition. To stay informed about SOT programs, summer internships, and other items of interest, a student can become an Undergraduate Student Affiliate
