A huge shoutout to the 100+ SOT member volunteers who made the undergraduate activities at the SOT 64th Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in Orlando, Florida, a fantastic success! Your dedication to fostering the next generation of toxicologists is truly inspiring. Check out the SOT Annual Meeting photo gallery for snapshots of all the fun!

A Packed Weekend of Learning and Networking

Over 200 undergraduate students registered for the meeting, and half kicked off their experience with the Undergraduate Education Program on Sunday, March 16. SOT President Laurie Haws welcomed students to deepen their understanding of toxicology concepts, consider graduate studies in toxicology, and learn more about career options for toxicologists.

Engaging Science, Active Learning

Students enjoyed presentations from Patricia Silveyra, Jamie DeWitt, and Nishad Jayasundara, who introduced research from different toxicology subfields. Jennifer Newell-Caito led an interactive case study on indigenous extracts as potential antioxidants, giving students hands-on experience in data analysis and presentation.

Grad School Prep and Career Pathways

After a morning of science, students joined Graduate School Breakouts and Career Roundtables. Academic advisor facilitators, including Lauren Aleksunes, Matthew Campen, Darryl Hood, Adam Lauver, and Patricia Silveyra, along with graduate students Marisol Arellano, Arturo Barahona, Christopher Clark, Evangeline Schott, and Madeline Vera-Colon, shared insights on graduate school applications and success strategies. Then, career representatives, including Laura Armstrong, Arjun Basavarajappa, Angela Curry, Andrea De Vizcaya-Ruiz, Sanket Gadhia, Xiaojia He, Gina Hilton, Kristin Kerstens, Tejas Lahoti, Alexandra Noel, Jason Richardson, Shreesh Sammi, Jonathan Shannahan, Nicole Soucy, and Lauren Walker, discussed diverse career paths in toxicology.

The day wrapped up with an Open Time with Academic Program Directors where students connected with representatives from 30+ academic programs—an invaluable networking opportunity! Students also had the opportunity to connect with representatives from SOT Special Interest Groups, including ASIO, HOT, TAO, and WIT, to learn more about these communities within SOT.

The Undergraduate Diversity Program: A Transformative Experience

From March 15–17, the Undergraduate Diversity Program (UDP) introduced 29 students and four faculty advisors to the world of toxicology. The weekend featured hands-on activities, mentoring, and plenty of networkingall thanks to our dedicated volunteers.

Saturday Night Fun & Learning: Students bonded over a ToxSquad icebreaker before learning about toxicology fundamentals from Christa Wright. The night continued with the UDP Reunion, where alumni and friends of the program caught up ahead of the Annual Meeting, enjoyed a scavenger hunt, and recognized the 2025 Perry J. Gehring Diversity Student Travel Award recipients, Jenielle Domaoal and Gabriela Rojas Pacheco.

SundayImmersed in Toxicology: Recipients of the Undergraduate Diversity Program Student Travel Award joined recipients of the SOT Undergraduate Research Award, ToxMSDT participants, and other undergraduates registered for the meeting for the full-day Undergraduate Education Program.

MondayScientific Exploration: With their mentors, students attended the Opening Plenary Lecture, explored Scientific and Poster Sessions, and participated in the In Vitro Toxicology Lecture and Luncheon. A career talk by Kimberly Hodge-Bell, The ‘TikTok’ Effect on My Career as a Toxicologist, closed the program on a very inspiring note!

Mentors: The Heart of the Program

One of the Undergraduate Diversity Program’s greatest strengths is its mentorship. Each group of five students had a Host Mentor and Peer Mentor, who guided them before, during, and beyond the meeting. A special thank you to all the mentors who dedicated their time to supporting these future toxicologists! UDP Host Mentors this year included Xiaojia He, Chris Kassotis, Julie Moreno, Frederic Moulin, Shreesh Sammi, and Patricia Silveyra. UDP Peer Mentors included Arturo Barahona, Christopher Clark, Samuel Cochran, Charlotte McVeigh, Evangeline Schott, and Alexandra Svetlik. We also had additional Peer and Host Mentors for the students who joined on Sunday for the Undergraduate Education Program. These mentors included Laura Armstrong, Napissara Boonpraman, Chris Curran, Angela Curry, Frederick Ekuban, Elana Elkin, Lucie Ford, Hyland Gonzalez, Joshua Gray, Gagandeep Kaur, Kristin Kerstens, Judit Marsillach, Richard Nass, Sumira Phatak, Mindy Reynolds, Crystal Roach, Adam Schuller, Ashley Schwartz, Cody Smith, Nicole Soucy, Nicole Sparks, Sarah Tucker, Lauren Walker, and Xiang Xue.

Undergraduate Gab with a Grad Over Grub

Pizza and Gabbing about Grad School

On Tuesday, March 18, the SOT Inclusion, Diversity, and Engagement Committee (IDEC) hosted Gab with a Grad Over Grub, where undergraduates got to have informal conversations about graduate school with SOT grad student members—over pizza, of course! Special thanks to the 25 graduate student volunteers who took the time to share about their experiences: Narayan Acharya, Sarah-Marie Alam El Din, Hassan Alkhadrawi, Voke Aminone, Marisol Arellano, Josephine Brown-Leung, Gina Capece, Christopher Clark, Alyssa Daniel, Alexis Digman, Natalie Eppler, Hyland Gonzalez, Ruth Meletz, Jadesola Oladosu, Trisha Patel, Kamila Sadko, Caitlin Schneider, Evangeline Schott, Ashley Schwartz, Kristina Stayer, Alexandra Svetlik, Tenley Weil, Jennae Whitted, and Melanie Wilson.

Thank You to Our Volunteers & IDEC Members

This program wouldnt be possible without our incredible volunteers and the members of IDEC, including Co-Chair Checo Rorie; members Aline de Conti, Deacqunita Harris, Jessica Hartman, Jennifer Larson-Casey, Amie Lund, Teresa Palacios-Hernandez, Lauren Poole, and Dahea You; postdoctoral representative Samuel Cochran; graduate student representative Evangline Schott; NIH grant PI José Manautou and co-PI Karilyn Sant; and Council contacts Agnes Karmaus and Jennifer Rayner.

The Impact: A Launchpad for Future Toxicologists

For many students, this program is a game-changer, shaping their academic and professional paths. Many return as graduate students and even future SOT leaders. Thank you to everyone who made this event a success—we can’t wait to see you in San Diego for the 2026 program! The call for volunteers will go out in November.

I got so much more than I could have hoped out of the program and not only feel more confident in my abilities, but I trust myself in choosing the steps of my journey, which is huge.
