SOT is pleased to support an upcoming US Congress Briefing examining “A Healthy Start for Every Child: How the Environment Influences Health and Development.” The briefing will take place on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm in Room 902 of the Hart Senate Office Building; lunch will be provided.

This event will highlight the unique situation of children as it relates to environmental exposures. Cutting-edge research on childhood exposures and how the environment can affect the pathogenesis of childhood asthma and neurodevelopmental disorders will be featured.

SOT member Linda S. Birnbaum, PhD, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP), will deliver the welcome and research overview. Joseph M. Braun, PhD, of Brown University will follow Dr. Birnbaum and present a talk entitled, “Do Low Levels of PFAS in Drinking Water Threaten Child Health?” Nadia N. Hansel, MD, of Johns Hopkins Medicine will then discuss “Indoor Air Quality and Childhood Asthma.”

Later in the evening, a Capitol Hill Reception in honor of Dr. Birnbaum’s upcoming retirement from the NIEHS and NTP will take place, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at 2043 Rayburn House Office Building. Melissa J. Perry of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University will deliver remarks, as will Dr. Birnbaum herself. SOT is serving a supporter of the reception, the honorary host of which is Representative David E. Price of North Carolina.
