The US Food and Drug Administration Grand Rounds (US FDA) are open to all members of the scientific community and Continuing Education (CE) credits are offered. On September 8, 2016, from 12:00 pm–1:00 pm, Grand Rounds will be presented by Connie M. Ruzicka on “Rapid On-Site Detection of Unlawful Substances in Dietary Supplements Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry.” Dr. Ruzicka is at the US FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). The growing availability and use of dietary supplements among consumers has been accompanied by an increased frequency of adulteration of these products with undeclared pharmaceutical substances and unapproved ingredients. One of the techniques that US FDA’s CDER has developed for the program is ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), a rapid, reliable screening tool that requires minimal sample preparation and produces results in less than a minute.
This presentation will describe the development of IMS screening methods for product quality surveillance and the enhancement of action including consumer warnings of potential hazard. For more information and for separate registration instructions for US FDA and non-US FDA attendees, please see the US FDA website. Questions about this topic can be submitted during the presentation. For those unable to view the lecture, the archived presentation will be posted.
