Plan Your Visit to the 2016 SOT Annual Meeting Global Gallery

Thirty-five toxicology societies from around the world are participating in the 2016 SOT Global Gallery held in conjunction with the 55th SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo. For the fifth year, societies are prominently displaying posters that showcase their formation, key accomplishments, strategic initiatives, and activities. The Global Gallery is adjacent to the SOT Pavilion (Booth 500) in ToxExpo. A “Representative Attended” poster time is on Monday, March 14, 11:45 am‒12:15 pm and these posters will continue on display during Expo hours (9:15 am‒4:30 pm, March 14‒16). The goal of SOT and of all these societies is to increase the reliance of international decision-makers on the science of toxicology and to advance human health and disease prevention. All participating societies are listed on the SOT website.

You will want to attend these presentations on cutting-edge scientific advances: From 8:00 am‒9:20 am in Great Hall A. Doris Taylor, Texas Heart Institute, Houston, Texas, will present “Building a Heart: From Cells to Tissues to Organs” and Joan Nichols, University of Texas, Medical Branch Galveston, Texas, will address “From 3D Microchip to Human Organ Culture Models: Trachea, Bronchi/Bronchiole and Lung Biomimetic Models for Disease Modeling, Drug Discovery and Toxicology Evaluations.”All 2016 SOT Annual Meeting Featured Sessions are described on the SOT website.

In Vitro Toxicology Lecture and Luncheon

Supported by an educational grant from the Colgate-Palmolive Company, the In Vitro Toxicology Lecture and Lunch will be held from 11:30 am‒1:00 pm in La Nouvelle Orleans, Ballroom B. SOT 2015‒2016 Past President Norbert Kaminski, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, will present the lecture, “Multicellular Model Systems for In Vitro Toxicity Testing—Strengths and Challenges.” Students and postdoctoral scholars must be registered to attend and space is limited. The goal of the In Vitro Toxicology Lectures series is to feature important research using in vitro and alternative techniques to study basic mechanisms and to illustrate how these test methods benefit animal welfare by refining, reducing, and replacing animal use whenever it is feasible.

Mel Andersen to Deliver Merit Award Lecture

2016 SOT Merit Award recipient Melvin Andersen will deliver the award lecture, “Forty-Five Years of Modeling Dose-Response Relationships: An Unanticipated Career,” from 12:30 pm‒1:20 pm in Room R08 of the convention center. This retrospective examines his experience using quantitative models for understanding dose-response relationships. The talk touches on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and new directions in cell-pathway based models. The main lessons of a long career are that models require us to state our ideas clearly and quantitatively and then to see if our ideas are correct or in need of revision. The use of these models repeatedly shows that it is even more important to know our ideas are wrong than simply to think they might be right.

Participate in A Conversation with NIEHS Director Linda Birnbaum and NIH NCATS Pamela McInnes

Meet the Directors: A Conversation with Linda Birnbaum and Pamela McInnes will be held from 1:30 pm‒2:30 pm in Room 220 of the Convention Center. This session provides an opportunity for attendees to have a candid and open discussion with two key leaders of federal organizations with missions to protect and improve public health.  Linda Birnbaum, PhD, is Director, of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and Pamela MacInnes, DDS, is Deputy Director, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the National Institutes of Health. The entire session will be devoted to a question-and-answer format. All 2016 SOT Annual Meeting Featured Sessions are described on the SOT website.

SOT/EUROTOX Debaters Argue—Preclinical (Safety) Toxicology Testing Predicts the Clinical Outcome

SOT Debater Thomas M. Monticello, Amgen, Inc., Thousand Oaks, California, and EUROTOX Debater, Ruth Roberts, ApconiX Ltd., Alderley Eagle, United Kingdom, will discuss the state of the science on preclinical safety testing and whether it can predict clinical outcomes. Regardless of framework differences and personal convictions, each scientific debate delegate will present relevant evidence and compelling scientific arguments to persuade and appeal to the response of the audience in order to obtain the approval or refusal of the motion. In addition to being a featured session at the SOT Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, this debate will again take place (with the debaters taking the reverse positions) in Istanbul, Turkey, during the 52nd Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology (2016 EUROTOX Annual Congress), September 4–7, 2016.
