In the September 2014 Peer Review Notes, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review (CSR) Director Richard Nakamura remarked on the increased number of grant applications in an article entitled CSR Is Facing a Surge in Applications. Dr. Nakamura stated that the "NIH Office of Extramural Research reports about a 10 percent increase in research project grant applications across NIH.” He noted that the increase was “due to NIH removing limits on resubmitting the same research idea…to keep alive worthy ideas that would have been funded had the NIH budget kept up with inflation.” Futhermore, Director Nakamura described other “burdens” that have resulted such as a need for more reviewers and staff. Moreover, he remarked that, “Success rates—which are at historic lows—will go down further, and finding highly qualified scientists to review applications will become more difficult than it is now.” For additional information, please visit the NIH CSR website.
