Below are a number of Society of Toxicology (SOT)–sponsored meetings and events that may be of interest to you. For more information, contact the organizers directly.

Toxicity of Biodiesel and Other Biofuels: Implication for Global Use, September 4–5, 2014, Edinburgh, Abstract Site Open

"Toxicity of Biodiesel and Other Biofuels: Implications for Global Use," will be held September 4–5, 2014, at the University of Edinburgh Campus, Edinburgh, Scotland. The purpose of this conference is to bring together interested parties and experts in the biodiesel arena to present state-of-the-art knowledge on the production, chemistry, combustion engineering, and toxicology of biofuels. Scientists from government, academia, and industry are anticipated to attend this meeting that comprehensively will address the upcoming issues related to increased liquid biofuels usage on society, including matters related to health effects. The conference goals include: 1) provide knowledge regarding current biofuels usage and estimates for the future (for research planning); 2) present links of toxicity to biodiesel chemical markers in the fuel or emissions; and 3) compare biodiesel toxicity endpoints with petroleum fuel toxicity for various health outcomes. The understanding that evolves from this conference will help lead to a better focus on the most appropriate liquid fuel sources that will be developed in the future. The abstract submission system is open until August 1, 2014. For additional information and to register for this SOT Contemporary Concepts in Toxicology conference, please visit the SOT website.

Adverse Outcome Pathways: From Research to Regulation, September 3–5, 2014, Submission Deadline: July 28

A workshop, Adverse Outcome Pathways: From Research to Regulation, will be held September 3–5, 2014 at the William H. Natcher Conference Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. An adverse outcome pathway (AOP) is a conceptual framework constructed from existing knowledge that relates exposure of a toxic substance to subsequent steps that result in illness or injury. AOPs are increasingly seen as a key element in an evolution of toxicology towards use of a mechanistic, predictive paradigm. The National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods (NICEATM), the European Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM), and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) are pleased to invite you to a workshop exploring how to encourage scientific and practical progress in AOP concepts, which may improve regulatory assessment of chemical toxicity. A large portion of the workshop is devoted to moderated breakout groups and whole-group discussion. Opportunities for poster presentation will be offered as well as Trainee Travel Awards and Poster Presentation Awards, all of which have a submission deadline of July 28. No registration fee is required. Space may fill, so register early. The registration deadline is August 15. For more information, please visit the conference website

Seventh RTP Rodent Pathology Course, Focusing on Endocrine Pathology, September 21–23, 2014, Raleigh, NC

The Seventh RTP Rodent Pathology course will be held September 21–23, 2014, at the Embassy Suites Raleigh–Durham Airport/Brier Creek, located just three miles from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The course showcases local North Carolina expertise as well as speakers from around the nation and world. It is designed to provide useful information on current issues and techniques in rodent pathology to research and diagnostic pathologists, pathologists-in-training, and interested members of the research community. The course features presentations covering state-of-the-art rodent endocrine system pathology and research as well as an interactive case presentation workshop led by Jerrold Ward including applied histopathology and hands-on evaluation of case material (please submit your problem cases early!). The keynote speaker is Thomas J. Rosol, Professor of Veterinary Biosciences, Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Rosol will present “Endocrine Pathology of Calcium Regulating Hormones: From Metabolism to Bone Metastasis." The sessions are didactic and cover basic and advanced techniques in handling and interpreting tissues, special techniques for diagnostics, and a review of diseases of the rodent endocrine system. Normal anatomy and histology will be covered, followed by presentations on mechanisms of disease, toxicologic pathology, and animal models. Registration and course information can be found at the conference website.
