On April 15, 2014, Robin M. Ikeda, Deputy Director, Office of Noncommunicable Diseases, Injury and Environmental Health, and Acting Director, National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared the NCEH/ATSDR’s final strategic plan for fiscal years 2014–2016, as well as the topical priorities for the next 1–2 years. The strategic plan reflects significant contributions from both internal staff and environmental health partners.
The strategic plan includes a shared NCEH/ATSDR vision, mission, core values, goals, and objectives. It will guide our work toward achieving the following three overarching goals:
- Implement environmental health programs and interventions to protect and promote health.
- Prepare for and respond to public health emergencies, including chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear incidents; natural disasters; and extreme weather events.
- Identify, characterize, and monitor health outcomes and environmental exposures to guide actions that protect and promote health.
In addition to the strategic plan, which takes a broad, functional approach, a list of topical priorities and related actions to implement in the next 1–2 years have been developed. The topical priorities include:
- Asthma
- Safe Drinking Water
- Children’s Health
- Innovative Laboratory Methods
