SOT FDA Colloquia: Safety Assessment of Food Packaging and Other Food Contact Substances, May 23
The next SOT FDA Colloquia on Emerging Toxicological Sciences: Challenges in Food and Ingredient Safety will be held on Tuesday, May 23 at the US FDA Wiley Auditorium and a live webcast also will be presented during this timeframe of 8:30 am‒12:50 pm ET. This colloquium focuses on the Safety Assessment of Food Packaging and Other Contact Substances. The majority of the public thinks of food safety primarily in terms of either the food or food additives shown on the labels in which they are packaged. However, materials that come in contact with food also are subject to regulation as food additives because the components of these packaging and contact materials may migrate into the food. As the distribution and product protection of food has expanded over a period of decades, highly engineered packaging has evolved to protect foods from contamination and spoilage. This colloquium will focus on the various types of packaging (e.g., coatings, plastics/polymer), manufacturing processes, and safety and exposure assessments. The deadline to register for on-site participation is May 15, 2017. Registration for the webcast is open until the day of the colloquium. The SOT FDA Food Safety Colloquia present scientific training that is high quality, cutting-edge, future-oriented toxicological science for US FDA employees and are open to the public at no cost. However, the colloquia are not a public forum for discussion of toxicology regulatory issues.
HESI Workshop on Advances and Roadblocks for Use of Genomics Data in Cancer Risk Assessment, May 25‒26
This two-day workshop is organized by Health Canada, the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) Application of Genomics to Mechanism-Based Risk Assessment Committee, and McGill University and will feature multi-sector and international perspectives on current and potential applications of genomics in cancer risk assessment. Focused on the Advances and Roadblocks for Use of Genomics Data in Cancer Risk Assessment for Drugs and Chemicals, this workshop will be held May 25‒26, 2017, in Montreal, Canada. Through presentations and case studies from representatives of academia, government, and industry, the workshop will identify and address:
- Areas in the current cancer risk assessment paradigm where genomics approaches will have a chance to add value in the future;
- Insights gained through genomics data or molecular approaches, and their applications in regulatory decision making;
- Roadblocks for implementation of genomics in cancer risk assessment; and
- Formulation of recommendations and next steps needed to implement genomics approaches in cancer risk assessment
The registration deadline is May 1 and the registration link includes lodging information.
Additional information, including the workshop flier and draft program, are available on the workshop website. Please contact Dr. Raegan O’Lone (rolone@hesiglobal.org) with any questions.
Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins Gordon Research Conference, June 18‒23
The 2017 Gordon Research Conference on Mycotoxins and Phycotoxins will be held June 18‒23, 2017, at Stonehill College, Easton, Massachusetts. This conference will focus on Understanding the Exposure and Global Health Risks Associated with Naturally Occurring Environmental Biotoxins in a Rapidly Changing World. This conference will bring together a wide range of outstanding senior scientists as well as those who are at early career and students to address the very practical task of ensuring the safety of food and water supplies. Podium presentations will include a mixture of established and junior scientists, with a view to establishing networks and ideas to understand and mitigate these complex threats. A critical component will be dedicated to guided discussions after each presentation, with discussion leaders recognized for their expertise in each particular area. Poster sessions will provide an opportunity for fertile cross-disciplinary interactions. The complete program and online application are available at the conference website.
Lung Development, Injury & Repair Gordon Research Seminar, August 19–20
The Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Lung Development, Injury & Repair will be held August 19‒20, 2017, Colby-Sawyer College, New London, New Hampshire. This seminar is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting-edge ideas. This meeting will focus on new frontiers in pulmonary health and disease, highlighting in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies linking causes and mechanisms that are paving ways for new therapies and treatments. The GRS also will include a mentorship component on the various career opportunities in this research field. The meeting will feature approximately 10 talks and 2 poster sessions. All attendees are expected to actively participate in the GRS either by giving an oral presentation or presenting a poster. Therefore, all applications, which are due by July 22, 2017, must include an abstract. The chairs will select speakers from abstracts submitted by May 19, 2017. Those applicants who are not chosen for talks and those who apply after the deadline to be considered for an oral presentation will be expected to present a poster. For additional information, please visit the conference website.
