Jayadev Raju, Ph.D.

Dr. Raju is a Research Scientist at Health Canada’s Food Directorate in Ottawa, Canada, where he works on food chemical safety. Dr. Raju delivers research on health effects/hazard identification/toxicology expertise related to carcinogenesis and co-carcinogenesis of foods and food constituents, including those classified as nutrients, naturally occurring toxins, additives, contaminants, processing-induced compounds and packaging material-migrating chemicals. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Life Sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India in 1994 and 1999, respectively. Dr. Raju was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Canada; 1999-2003), the American Health Foundation Institute for Cancer Prevention (Valhalla, NY, USA; 2003-2004), and the University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Canada; 2004-2006), and has been with Health Canada since 2006. He is an author/co-author of over 60 publications including peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Dr. Raju has served on the as a scientific expert in the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI): NanoRelease Food Additive Working Group and the Halifax Project/Getting To Know Cancer: Environmental Exposure Task Group. He is an active member of the Society of Toxicology (USA) since 2013. Dr. Raju is also an active member of the Society of Toxicology of Canada since 2010; and has served as the Annual Symposium Programme Committee Chair (2013), the Councillor on the Board of Directors (2018-2019), and currently serves as the Society’s Vice President (2020 to present). He is a recipient of a Visiting Scientist Fellowship at the German Cancer Research Institute (Heidelberg, Germany, 2004); the V.E. Henderson Award (Society of Toxicology of Canada, 2010); Visiting Fellow - Chemoprevention Program (The Peggy & Charles Stephenson Oklahoma Cancer Center, Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, 2011); the International ToxScholar Outreach Award (Society of Toxicology – USA, 2016); and the Health Canada Associate-Deputy and Deputy Ministers’ Award for Excellence in Science (2015) and in Wellness (2019).
