Around the World of Toxicology: October 2023 Partner Activities Update

Each month, SOT provides an update on activities and events of importance to the toxicology community through the release of the “Around the World of Toxicology” blog. To submit an event, opportunity, or information for consideration for inclusion in the monthly “Around the World of Toxicology” blog, complete the special submission form for “Around the World of Toxicology” items. Please note that only activities by societies and professional associations (i.e., nonprofits) will be considered. If you are an organization or company seeking to promote an event, please submit your activity to the SOT “Calendar of Events.”

 

Reminders of Upcoming, Previously Featured Deadlines and Activities

  • On October 6, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is hosting the final webinar in a three-part series titled “Trust Your Gut: Establishing Confidence in Gastrointestinal Models.” Following this webinar is a two-day workshop October 11–12, 2023, on the same topic.
  • IUTOX, the SOT Endowment Fund, and SOT are sponsoring travel awards for junior or senior scientists from a country where toxicology is underrepresented to attend the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, March 10–14, 2024. The application deadline is October 9.
  • EUROTOX is hosting a webinar titled “Applied Industrial Toxicology” on October 11, 2023. Anna Steneholm, Toxicology Knowledge Team, is the speaker. Registration is limited to the first 100 people.
  • October 30 is the deadline to submit an abstract for the 12th Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries, taking place April 15–18, 2024, in Santiago, Chile, and early-bird registration ends on November 30. This event is being hosted by the Sociedad de Toxicología de Chile and the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX).

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

“Toward Science Without Walls” is the theme of the 2024 AAAS Annual Meeting, February 15–17, 2024, in Denver, Colorado. Early-Bird registration is now open for the meeting and ends January 25.

American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT)

The deadline to submit an abstract for the 2024 ACMT Annual Scientific Meeting is November 15, 2023. The meeting is taking place April 12–14, 2024, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. To support the participation of medical students, residents, and international researchers, the Medical Toxicology Foundation is offering a limited number of travel awards.

British Society of Toxicological Pathology (BSTP)

The 38th Annual Scientific Meeting of the BSTP will be November 15–16, 2023, in Verona, Italy. The early-bird registration deadline is October 2, and the meeting theme is “Preclinical Translatability and Pathology of Cell-Based Therapies.”

International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX)

The IUTOXtalks webinar series returns on November 15 with SOT member Ivan Rusyn, PhD, MD, delivering a presentation titled “Using Key Characteristics of Human Carcinogens to Organize and Evaluate Carcinogenic Hazards.” SOT members are invited to attend but must create an account in the IUTOX community platform to register.

National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR)

NABR is hosting a webinar on November 8, 2023, titled “Review of the Veterinary Consortium for Research Animal Care and Welfare (VCRACW) Guide Revision Survey.” This webinar is exclusive to members of NABR association members, so SOT members are invited to attend this virtual event.

National Postdoctoral Association (NPA)

An “International Equity Summit” is being hosted virtually by NPA on November 9. This event will consist of online discussions aimed at identifying barriers and finding paths forward to address issues that impact international postdoc scholars.

Society for Birth Defects Research and Prevention Society (BDRP)

BDRP is hosting a live, virtual course on human teratogens November 13–15, 2023. CME/CEU credits are available for individuals who attend the course live on each day between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm (US EST, UTC -4).

US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA)

On October 4, the US FDA in partnership with the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA is hosting a meeting titled “Mitigating Risks from Human Xylazine Exposure.” This free, all-day meeting is being held in-person at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC, and virtually.

The US FDA Omics Days 2023 is being held October 10–11, 2023, at the FDA White Oak Campus and virtually. The free event will feature speakers from industry, academia, and government.

Also on October 11, 2023, the US FDA is hosting two virtual events:

  • An all-day symposium titled “2023 NanoDay Symposium: Continuous Manufacturing of Nanomaterials.” This free event is intended for regulatory science and regulatory affairs professionals, researchers working in nanomaterials, and others.

  • A four-hour workshop titled “Menopause: Potential Impact on Clinical Pharmacology and Opportunities for Future Research.” This free event will explore “the impact of menopause on the pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and exposure-response relationships of FDA-regulated drugs and biologics used by menopausal women for non-menopause-related indications.”
