Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological disorder, and as such, this session was of the utmost importance. This session was full of diverse viewpoints and a plethora of information on PD, and I found it extremely relevant to our ever-changing landscape of neuroscience. We heard talks from an epidemiologist, academia researchers, and researcher in the nonprofit sector that really helped give an overall picture of PD research. As someone who researches neurodegenerative disease, I thoroughly enjoyed this session and found it full of great information. The session began with epidemiologist Samuel Goldman from the University of California San ...

Recently, I have begun to think about the role that exposure plays on behavioral health and human neurobiology. Chemical and psychological stress can induce changes in the brain’s ability to properly function, which can lead to long-term psychiatric consequences. That’s why I decided to attend the Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award Lecture titled “Neurotoxicity and Neuroinflammation Profiles in Animal Models: A Brief Review of Some Unexpected Response Modifiers of Likely Relevance to Toxicology.” When 2024 SOT Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award recipient James P. O’Callaghan set out on his research career 40 years ago, he was a toxicologist—even if ...

A few years ago, I was asked what makes a great toxicologist. The question caught me off-guard as I struggled to convey a complex recipe that can’t be found in any toxicology textbook. Of course, maintaining a solid grip on the principles of toxicology as well as life sciences and physical sciences is a must for any great toxicologist, but that will only get you part of the way to greatness. You’ll need to read this entire blog to learn the secret and appreciate why diversity and inclusivity are part of it. A 2024 Roundtable Session on diversity, equity, and inclusion demonstrated that SOT is nudging all SOT members in a direction toward “greatness” ...

This essay is part of a series designed to celebrate SOT member diversity and showcase the diverse pathways and experiences of its members. As a Mexican boy growing up in Zacatecas, I never imagined I would end up doing research in the US. Like many Mexicans, I grew up surrounded by people who knew someone that migrated to the US to pursue the “American Dream.” As a young student, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life, but something I was sure of is that I always pictured myself living in Mexico. Things turned out so differently. When I was still an undergraduate, I started working at a children’s museum in my hometown. I was fascinated ...

We are seeking toxicologists interested in contributing to the development of online learning resources in basic toxicology for undergraduates as part of the Toxicology Mentoring and Skills Development Training ( ToxMSDT ) program. Currently, we are recruiting potential authors to create a case study on Forever Chemicals (such as PCBs and PFAS) and to update a Regulatory Toxicology module. Teams of three—which will include topic experts, undergraduate educators, and those interested in the education of undergraduates—will develop engaging case studies and modules that creatively present content for exploration by the learner. Students selected ...

Did you know that the SOT Endowment Fund is actually a series of funds—currently 55!—where each is established for different purposes based on the interests and desires of the fund’s founder(s)? These funds help support various areas within the Society, including many Component Groups (awards especially) and toxicologists at all levels of their career. Last year, over $150,000 was distributed from the Endowment Fund to support the future of toxicology. For those unaware of the specifics of each fund, the high number of funds can be overwhelming. In an effort to reduce this confusion, we are excited to announce the launch of a new search function for the ...
