Regulation and Policy Update: SOT Signs Letters Urging Funding Support for the NICHD and Large Animal Research

In a Friends of NICHD letter to the leadership of the US Senate and House Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Education, and Related Agencies Services, the member organizations, which include SOT, urge the Subcommittees to increase the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) funding to $1.816 billion for FY2023. This funding increase request is proportionate to the increase in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding requested for FY2023 in an Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research recommendation that SOT co-signed on May 10, 2022. I want to thank SOT and the Faculty United for Toxicology Undergraduate Recruitment and Education (FUTURE) Committee for the SOT Undergraduate Faculty Research Grant that gave me the opportunity to support Shenell Brown to work in my lab at Elizabeth City State University during this past year. Denison Distinguished Emeritus Professor Michael “Mike” Steven Denison of Woodland, California, passed away on March 22, 2022, at age 67. His cause of death was glioblastoma. Mike and his twin brother, Steven, were born on December 8, 1954, in Shirley, Massachusetts, the son of Alan (deceased) and Alma Denison. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the AACT Career Workshop that was introduced in 2012 in San Francisco, California. I’m an Assistant Professor of environmental toxicology in the University of Mississippi (UM) BioMolecular Sciences Department. Our lab focuses on air pollution toxicology. The Faculty United for Toxicology Undergraduate Recruitment and Education Committee has selected four recipients of SOT Undergraduate Faculty Research Grant. Applicants are SOT members who teach and mentor undergraduates as a primary activity. The funds will support summer toxicology research by undergraduates at these institutions and, in one case, continued work during the academic year. SOT joined 350+ organizations as a member of the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research that signed a letter recommending a base budget of $49.048 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for FY23. The letter, organized by the Association of American Medical Colleges, also urges lawmakers to fund the new Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) separately from the NIH $49 billion base budget. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) is sponsoring a project to revise the NASEM ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Animals . As part of this effort, the Veterinary Consortium for Research Animal Care & Welfare has prepared a survey to collect institutional feedback on priority areas for revising the guide.
