The SOT Endowment F unds enhance SOT programs as well as provid e individual awards which recognize SOT members and provide travel support for the SOT Annual Meeting and other educational activities. In 2024 – 2025, the Endowment provided support for 215 individual awards, including the numerous awards administered by SOT C omponent G roups. Thanks to the support and continued generosity of SOT members and friends, the Endowment closed the fiscal year ( June 2025 ) with a balance over $6 million. SOT has learned that SOT Past President ( 1988–1989 ) James E. Gibson, PhD, passed away on November 22, 2025. Throughout his career, Dr. Gibson worked in various sectors, including academia, nonprofit, and industry. The common thread was his commitment to training in all areas of toxicology and ensuring that risk assessments were based on sound science instead of opinion. For more information, please see Dr. Gibson’s obituary .   This blog serves as an announcement of the member’s passing. SOT has learned that John A. Thomas, PhD, passed away on November 15, 2025. Dr. Thomas was a professor of pharmacology and toxicology and a medical educator. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse and the University of Iowa. He was a prolific author and published over 500 articles, monographs and textbooks. He served on many governmental committees or panels for the US Food and Drug Administration, US Environmental Protection Agency, National Institute of Environmental Health Services, the National Toxicology Program, and the National Library of Medicine. SOT has learned that longtime member Steven Galen Gilbert, PhD, DABT, passed away on July 15, 2025. Dr. Gilbert conducted research on the toxic effects of heavy metals and chemicals, founded the nonprofit Institute of Neurotoxicology and Neurological Disorders, and created the interactive website Toxipedia . SOT has learned that l ongtime SOT member Timothy Marrs , OBE , MD , DSc , FRCP , FRCPATH , FBTS , passed away on November 1, 2025. Dr. Marrs was a consultant in Edenbridge, United Kingdom, specializing in organophosphates and other nerve agents. His funeral will be on December 1 at the Edenbridge Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. For more information, please see Dr. Marrs’s obituary in The Telegraph . Recognizing that shifts in the government and economic landscapes have negatively impacted SOT members, SOT Council, with approval from the Endowment Fund Board, is creating a Hardship Relief Temporary Endowment Fund. Recognizing the effects of the government shutdown on members and their work, SOT is extending the abstract submission deadline for the 2026 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo for only federal government employees or those requiring approval of a government employee or agency (e.g., contractors) until December 13 . For all other submitters, the submission deadline remains November 13.   SOT members who are federal employees will receive an email containing instructions on how to submit an abstract past the November 13 deadline. Born and raised in Lima, the most polluted city in South America, I witnessed how pollution affected my family’s health, with cases of asthma, allergies, and even cancer. These environmental and public health challenges are common in Peru and motivated me to pursue a degree in e nvironmental e ngineering and dedicate myself to volunteering and research aimed at improving people’s quality of life.   During my undergraduate studies, I led a university research group focused on air pollution and its health effects.
