In Memoriam: Douglas Fort

The Society has learned that longtime member Douglas James Fort, PhD, passed away on September 23, 2024. Dr. Fort earned his MS and PhD in zoology from Oklahoma State University in 1988 and 1990, respectively, and joined SOT in 1996. Dr. Fort was well-respected for the development and validation of numerous toxicological test methods, including short-term embryo-larval assays, EDSP amphibian metamorphosis assays, reptilian reproduction and developmental assays, and fish developmental and reproduction assays. The Nominating Committee for Honorary Members invites SOT members to nominate a candidate for Honorary Membership . Since 1962, the Society has recognized nonmembers who embody outstanding and sustained achievements in the field of toxicology and/or allied disciplines with Honorary Membership. Honorary members are nominated by SOT Full or Associate members and elected by a two-thirds majority vote of the SOT Council. I am a final year PhD candidate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill investigating the sex-specific effects of wood smoke exposure on lung health and macrophage function. I had the wonderful privilege of receiving an SOT Supplemental Training for Education Program (STEP) Award. During my fourth year, I discovered that I enjoyed using R programming to study large ’omics datasets. This experience inspired me to pursue a career as a data analyst for the toxicological sciences.
