The Society has learned that longtime member James M. Cholakis, PhD, passed away on September 10, 2024. During his career, Dr. Cholakis worked for Midwest Research Institute, Quincy Labs, and Shook, Hardy & Bacon before starting a toxicology consulting practice. A memorial service that can be attended in person or virtually is planned for November 25. Information on the memorial service and a full obituary are available online . The Society has learned that longtime member Bernard Jortner, VMD, passed away on September 28, 2024. Dr. Jortner was the Founding President of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and Co-director of the Virginia Tech Laboratory for Neurotoxicity Studies. Dr. Jortner contributed greatly to the fields of neuropathology, neurotoxicology, and veterinary pathology. Members are encouraged to read Virginia Tech’s “ In Memoriam ” article. Eaton, PhD, DABT, FATS, based on Dr. Halpert’s obituary James Halpert, PhD, a renowned pharmacologist who was a member of SOT for 25 years (1985–2010) passed away on June 3, 2024. He earned a BS in Scandinavian languages from the University of California Los Angeles in 1971, a PhD in biochemistry from Uppsala University in Sweden in 1977, and then an MS in toxicology from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden in 1978. Dr. Halpert continued his studies as a postdoctoral fellow at Vanderbilt University for two years, followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship at Karolinska Institute.
